“Jake?” Brent asked when he sat on the chair and folded his arms up on the side of Brent’s bed,

burying his face in them. He took off Jake’s hat and stroked his blond hair. His stomach

clenched, knowing something had affected Jake badly for him to have silently laid his head on

the side of the bed. “What’s wrong? What’s happened?”

“Pa had a heart attack,” Jake’s muffled voice replied. “He’s dead, Brent.”

Brent could hear a mixture of grief and anger in his voice, even though Jake kept his face hidden

in the crook of his arm.

“Oh, no. I’m so sorry, Jake,” he said softly.

For a long while Jake said nothing, keeping his face buried in his arms as Brent lent him his

silent support, knowing Jake would speak when he was ready.

“I was pissed at him, Brent. I hated that he never once believed in me, and then hated him more

for not accepting me and turning his back on me when I went to tell him how things were

between you and me. He was a cold bastard sometimes. I’m even more pissed at myself for

never telling him so and just taking what he gave me.

“But I guess I still kind of hoped we’d patch things up someday, you know? That’s not going to

happen now, not ever.”

“Sometimes it happens that way, Jake, and there’s nothing you can do about it. It was his

decision, not yours. You shouldn’t blame yourself for it.”

“Maybe. He wasn’t all bad, you know, except for over this and the rodeo. He was wrong about

that, Brent, but he always did right by us while we were growing up. He was a good father when

we were young. Worked hard, always got us what we needed. Never went hungry a day in my

life and always had a roof over my head.”

“I know, Jake. I know.”

“I have to go home tomorrow for the funeral. I have to face my mother and my brothers.”

“I’ll go with you. One day out of here won’t kill me.”

“Oh, no, you’re not. You’re stayin’ put. I ain’t gonna chance you going against the doctors’

orders by leaving the hospital and maybe getting yourself hurt worse. Besides, I think I need to

do this on my own, anyhow,” Jake said, lifting his head to turn sorrow-filled eyes to Brent.

Brent felt Jake’s grief as if it were his own and opened his arms. Carefully crawling up over the

mattress, Jake laid his head on Brent’s chest and wept, his fingers wrapped tightly in the thin

material of Brent’s hospital gown.
